John Deere 324G maintenance schedule and service intervals
Updated · Reviewed by Israel Margulies, founder and CEO of High Point GPS
Per John Deere's service interval chart for the 324G, change the engine oil and filter, both fuel filters and the hydraulic oil filter every 500 hours and check the chain case oil level then, drain and refill the hydraulic oil and the chain case oil every 1,000 hours, check valve lash at 1,500, and drain and refill the cooling system every 6,000 hours.
Servicing the 324G skid steer: chain cases, tires and filters
The John Deere 324G is a mid-size, vertical lift wheeled skid steer used on construction sites, farms, snow removal and rental fleets. On hard surfaces it is cheaper to run than a track loader, and most of its wear points are the tires, the chain cases and the loader pivots.
Deere's chart for the 320G, 324G and 325G marks a few items as wheeled-machine only: check tire pressure and wheel lug nut torque as required, check the chain case oil level every 500 hours and drain and refill it every 1,000. Deere's parts guide lists 5.5 gal of John Deere Hy-Gard chain case oil per side, so it is a bigger job than the name suggests. The hydraulic oil filter is replaced every 500 hours and the oil every 1,000.
Deere publishes 324G guides for PIN 1T0324G___J328658 and J387407 and later, and both list 3.3 gal of Plus-50 II engine oil, 7.0 gal of Hydrau hydraulic and hydrostatic oil and 3.3 gal of Cool-Gard II pre-mix coolant. Deere recommends fluid samples (engine oil every 250 hours, hydraulic oil, fuel and coolant every 500) and notes that intervals may be adjusted on the results. Check your PIN and operator's manual.
Typical John Deere 324G maintenance schedule
- Every 10 hours or daily: Check engine oil, coolant and hydraulic oil levels; Lubricate the boom linkage, cylinder pivot points and Quik-Tatch linkage
- As required: Check tire pressure and wheel lug nut torque; Check and clean the cooling package; check the fuel tank breather; Check and drain the primary fuel filter and water separator; drain water from the fuel tank; Replace the primary air filter (the secondary every third primary change); service the exhaust filter
- Every 50 hours: Check and clean the dust unloader valve
- Every 250 hours: Take an engine oil sample
- Every 500 hours: Drain and refill engine oil and replace the oil filter; Replace the primary fuel filter and water separator and the final fuel filter; Replace the hydraulic oil filter; Check the chain case oil level; Lubricate the steering linkage (if equipped); take hydraulic oil, fuel and coolant samples
- Every 1,000 hours: Drain and refill the hydraulic oil; Drain and refill the chain case oil; Replace the hydraulic oil reservoir breather and the fuel tank breather; Check coolant condition
- Every 1,500 hours: Check and adjust engine valve lash
- Every 6,000 hours: Drain and refill the cooling system
John Deere 324G daily inspection checklist
- Walk around for leaks and damage
- Engine oil, coolant and hydraulic oil levels
- Boom linkage, cylinder pivots and Quik-Tatch greased
- Attachment locked on the Quik-Tatch
- Tires: pressure, cuts and sidewall damage
- Wheel lug nuts tight
- Cooling package free of debris
- Fuel water separator checked
- Seat belt and control interlocks
- Lights, horn and back-up alarm
- Steps and handholds clean
- Hour meter reading recorded
What fails on John Deere 324G skid steers, and how to prevent it
- Chain cases: Low oil at the 500-hour check, noise or uneven travel. Check the level every 500 hours and drain and refill at 1,000
- Tires: Cuts, uneven wear, low pressure from site debris. Check pressure as required and inspect tires on the daily walk-around
- Wheel lug nuts: Loose wheel, elongated stud holes. Check torque as Deere lists, and after any wheel or tire change
- Hydraulic filter: Slow functions or dirty oil samples. Replace every 500 hours, the oil every 1,000
- Loader pivots: Pin and bushing play. Grease the boom, cylinder and Quik-Tatch points every 10 hours
Tracking John Deere 324G skid steers in FleetZap
Set up 324G services as hour-based PM schedules (50, 250, 500, 1,000 hours and up) and FleetZap opens the work order automatically when the hour meter gets there, with the task list from the chart attached.
Put a QR label in the cab for the daily check. Add tire pressure and lug nuts to Deere's 10-hour levels and grease points. A failed item opens a repair work order for that machine.
Hours come in from meter readings in the field app or from an optional GPS tracker, and the filters and oil you use go on the work order as parts, so each machine keeps its own service and parts history.
