Reorder point = Average used per day × Delivery time in days + Safety stock
With the defaults: 2 × 7 + 10 = 24 units. With 40 on the shelf, that leaves 8 days before you need to order. Not sure about safety stock? The safety stock calculator works it out.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Set a reorder point on every part you can’t do without; checking the shelf by eye is how machines end up waiting for a filter.
- Count stock out on the work order where the part is used, so the number on the shelf stays true.
- If you often order at the reorder point and still run out, the delivery time or the daily use is higher than you think.

Good to know
How do you calculate a reorder point?Multiply the average units used per day by the delivery time in days, then add safety stock. Using 2 a day with a 7-day delivery and 10 units of safety stock gives a reorder point of 24.
What happens if the reorder point is too low?The part runs out before the order arrives, and a machine waits for it. If you often order at the reorder point and still run short, raise the safety stock or check the real delivery time.
How often should reorder points be reviewed? When usage or a vendor's delivery time changes, and at least once a year using the last 6 to 12 months of real usage.
