OEE calculator: overall equipment effectiveness
Overall equipment effectiveness from one shift’s numbers: how much of the planned time the machine ran, how fast it ran compared with its ideal rate, and how much of the output was good.

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
Availability is run time ÷ planned time, performance is units made ÷ (run time × ideal rate), and quality is good units ÷ units made. With the defaults: 90% × 95% × 97.95% ≈ 83.7%. The OEE guide explains each factor and how to improve it.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Look at the three parts, not just the total: a low OEE from availability needs maintenance work, from performance needs process work, from quality needs both.
- Compare a machine with itself over time, not with another plant’s number; planned time and ideal rate are defined differently everywhere.
- Availability is the part maintenance controls most. Fewer breakdowns and shorter repairs move it first.

Good to know
How do you calculate OEE?Multiply availability by performance by quality. Availability is run time divided by planned time, performance is units made divided by what the ideal rate would have made in that run time, and quality is good units divided by units made. 90% × 95% × 98% gives about 83.8%.
What is a good OEE score?There is no single right number, because planned time and ideal rate are defined differently from plant to plant. Track each machine against itself over time and look at which of the three factors pulls the score down.
How does maintenance affect OEE?Mostly through availability: breakdowns, long repairs and waiting for parts all cut run time. Preventive maintenance also helps performance and quality, because worn machines run slower and make more scrap.
