CFM needed = Sum of CFM of tools used at once × (1 + Headroom)
Use each tool’s rated CFM at 90 psi from its label or manual, and add only the tools that really run together. With the example: 5 + 4 + 2.5 = 11.5 CFM, plus 30% is about 15 CFM at 90 psi. Compare it with the compressor’s delivered CFM at 90 psi, not its displacement. Tools that run nonstop, like sanders, need the full figure; short-burst tools are easier on the compressor.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Fix air leaks first: a leaking shop can lose a large share of what the compressor makes.
- Drain the tank and check filters on schedule; water in the lines wears tools out.
- A compressor that runs all the time to keep up is undersized or losing air somewhere.

How much CFM do I need?Add the CFM at 90 psi of the tools that run at the same time and add headroom, often 25 to 50%. 11.5 CFM of tools plus 30% is about 15 CFM.
Should I compare CFM or horsepower?CFM delivered at 90 psi. Horsepower and tank size don't tell you how much air a compressor delivers.
Why does my compressor run all the time?It's undersized for the tools, or air is leaking from hoses, fittings or tools. Fix leaks before buying a bigger unit.
