See FleetZap Maintenance · Try the demoThe formula
Payment = Loan × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), with r = APR ÷ 12 and n = months
The same fixed-rate formula as any installment loan. With the example: $108,000 at 9% over 60 months is about $2,242 a month, and about $26,500 of interest. Used trucks and new owner-operators often get higher rates and shorter terms; get the lender’s quote in writing. Add the payment to the truck cost per mile calculator to see what each mile has to earn.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Divide the monthly payment by the miles you expect to run to see what the truck adds to your cost per mile.
- A truck that sits waiting for repairs still needs its payment. Keeping it on its PM schedule protects the loan as much as the engine.
- Compare the total cost with a lease using the lease vs buy calculator.

Good to know
How do I calculate a truck loan payment?Payment = loan × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the yearly rate ÷ 12 and n is the months. $108,000 at 9% over 60 months is about $2,242 a month.
What are typical semi truck loan terms?Terms of three to six years are common, with rates that depend on credit, the truck's age and time in business. Get each lender's quote in writing and compare the total cost, not just the payment.
How does the payment affect cost per mile?Divide the monthly payment by the miles the truck runs in a month. At 10,000 miles, a $2,242 payment adds about $0.22 a mile.
Does this work for trailer and tractor loans?Yes. Any fixed-rate installment loan uses the same formula: enter the price, down payment, rate and term for the trailer, tractor or truck.
