How it’s calculated

The formula

MPG = (Odometer now − Odometer at last fill-up) ÷ Gallons to refill · Cost per mile = Price ÷ MPG

Fill the tank all the way each time, so the gallons you pump are exactly what the miles used. With the example: 650 miles on 98 gallons is 6.63 mpg, about $0.57 of fuel a mile. One tank is noisy; average several fill-ups before judging a truck. The fleet fuel guide covers what moves mpg.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • A truck whose mpg drops while its routes stay the same needs a look: tire pressure, injectors, dragging brakes or a clogged air filter.
  • Compare trucks doing the same work, not trucks on different routes or loads.
  • Fuel cost per mile goes straight into your cost per mile; the truck cost per mile calculator takes it from there.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate MPG?

Fill the tank, note the odometer, drive, fill it again and divide the miles driven by the gallons it took. 650 miles on 98 gallons is 6.63 mpg.

How do I find fuel cost per mile?

Divide the price per gallon by the mpg. At $3.80 and 6.63 mpg, fuel costs about $0.57 a mile.

Why does my mpg change from tank to tank?

Loads, routes, weather, idling and how full the pump fills the tank all vary. Average several fill-ups before comparing vehicles.
