How it’s calculated

The formula

Price = (Labor + Materials × (1 + Markup) + Equipment + Disposal) ÷ (1 − Margin)

With the example numbers: $720 labor + $2,070 materials + $250 equipment + $150 disposal is $3,190 of cost, so $4,253 at a 25% margin, about $5.32 a square foot. Use your own crew rates and supplier prices; the example isn’t a market rate. Equipment cost belongs in every quote, even for machines you own: they wear and need service.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Price from hours, not square feet alone: a tight backyard takes far longer than an open front lawn.
  • Add a contingency for rock, roots and access problems on digs.
  • Track real hours against the estimate on every job, and adjust your numbers.

Questions

Good to know

How do you estimate a landscaping job?

Add labor (crew hours × rate), materials with your markup, equipment and disposal, then divide by (1 − your margin) for the price.

What is a typical markup on landscaping materials?

It varies by company and material; many apply a markup to cover ordering, pickup and waste. Use what your costs need.

Should I price by square foot?

Use square feet as a check, but price from hours: access, slopes and digging conditions change the time a lot.
