How it’s calculated

The formula

Price per visit = (Area ÷ Pace + Travel) × (Labor + Equipment per hour) ÷ (1 − Margin)

With the example numbers: 10,000 sq ft at 20,000 sq ft an hour plus 15 minutes of travel is 45 minutes, $39 of cost, and $55.71 a visit at a 30% margin. These are example inputs, not market prices: your pace depends on the mower, the slopes and obstacles, and prices vary by area. Time your own jobs and check local rates.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Route visits so crews mow neighbors back to back; travel time is the cost that quietly eats margin.
  • Add trimming, edging and cleanup time for lawns with lots of beds or fences.
  • Keep mowers sharp and serviced on hours: a dull blade slows the crew and costs fuel.

Questions

Good to know

How much should I charge to mow a lawn?

Work out the time (area ÷ your crew's pace, plus travel), multiply by your labor and equipment cost per hour, and divide by (1 − your margin). Check it against local prices.

How long does it take to mow an acre?

It depends on the mower, slopes and obstacles. Time a few of your own jobs: an acre is 43,560 square feet.

Should I charge per visit or per month?

Many crews price per visit and offer a monthly rate for a fixed number of visits, which smooths cash flow for both sides.
