How it’s calculated

The formula

Equivalent miles = Engine hours × Average miles per engine hour

An engine that idles or runs a PTO wears while the odometer stands still, so a truck’s engine hours can say more than its miles. Work out the average from your own records: miles driven ÷ engine hours over a few months. With the example: 1,000 hours at 30 miles an hour is 30,000 miles of wear, and a 15,000 mile service comes every 500 hours. Where the maker gives an hour-based interval, use theirs. The hour meter guide covers getting readings you can trust.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Low miles per engine hour means lots of idling or work in place; service by hours, or by whichever comes first.
  • Compare the average across trucks doing the same work. One that idles far more stands out.
  • Record both meters at every service, so the conversion stays based on real numbers.

Questions

Good to know

How do you convert engine hours to miles?

Multiply engine hours by the vehicle's average miles per engine hour. Work that out from your own records: miles driven ÷ engine hours over the same months.

Why track engine hours on trucks?

Idling and PTO work wear the engine without adding miles. Trucks that idle a lot need service sooner than their odometer suggests.

Should I service by miles or hours?

Follow the maker's schedule. Where it gives both, service at whichever comes first.
