How it’s calculated

The formula

Value after n years = Price × (1 − Yearly rate)^n · Real rate = 1 − (Value today ÷ Price paid)^(1 ÷ Years)

Vehicles lose value fastest in the first years, so a fixed percentage of what’s left each year fits better than a straight line. With the example: $45,000 at 15% a year is worth about $19,970 after 5 years. Use your own resale data or used-vehicle guides for the rate; mileage and condition move it a lot. This is a market-value estimate, not tax depreciation; for that, see the MACRS calculator.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Add depreciation per mile to fuel and maintenance per mile to see what a vehicle really costs to run.
  • High-mileage vehicles lose value faster; a vehicle that racks up miles may be worth replacing sooner.
  • Service records add resale value. Keep them per vehicle, not in a drawer.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate vehicle depreciation?

Value after n years = price × (1 − yearly rate)^n. A $45,000 vehicle losing 15% a year is worth about $19,970 after 5 years.

How fast do vehicles depreciate?

It depends on the make, model, mileage and condition; most lose the most value in the first few years. Use resale data for your model rather than a general rate.

How do I find my vehicle's actual depreciation rate?

Rate = 1 − (value today ÷ price paid)^(1 ÷ years owned). A $45,000 vehicle worth $30,000 after 3 years has lost about 12.6% a year.
