How it’s calculated

The formula

Cost per year = Σ (Miles per year ÷ Service interval × Cost per service) + Other costs

Each wearing item is spread over the miles it lasts. With the example: 25,000 miles costs $400 in oil changes, $600 in tires, $375 in brakes and $800 in other work, so $2,175 a year, about $0.09 a mile. These are example prices: use your own invoices. Costs rise with age, so rerun it for older vehicles.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Compare the estimate with real spend per vehicle; one far above it is a candidate to replace.
  • Skipped oil changes and worn tires show up later as bigger bills. Keep services on schedule by miles.
  • Add fuel, depreciation and insurance per mile for the full cost of running the vehicle.

Questions

Good to know

How do you estimate vehicle maintenance cost?

Spread each service over the miles it lasts: miles per year ÷ interval × cost, for oil, tires and brakes, then add other repairs. Divide by miles for cost per mile.

What is a normal maintenance cost per mile?

It depends on the vehicle, its age and how it's used. Work it out from your own invoices per vehicle; costs climb as vehicles age.

What else goes into the cost of running a vehicle?

Fuel, depreciation, insurance, registration and financing. Maintenance is one part of the total cost per mile.
