Tax in a state = (Miles in the state ÷ Fleet mpg − Tax-paid gallons bought there) × State rate
Fuel used in a state is its miles divided by the fleet’s average mpg; you owe tax on the fuel used there and get credit for the tax you paid at its pumps. With the example numbers (which are not real state rates): you owe $262.50 in State 2 and get credits in States 1 and 3, so $50.00 net. Use the rates from the IFTA tax rate matrix for the quarter, and the forms your base state requires; some states add surcharges. This is an estimate, not a filing.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Fleet mpg covers every qualified vehicle in the account for the quarter, not one truck.
- Keep every fuel receipt and the trip records behind the miles: IFTA audits ask for both.
- Buying more fuel in low-tax states doesn’t lower the tax you owe; it’s settled on miles, so it mostly moves credits around.

Good to know
How is IFTA fuel tax calculated?Fleet mpg = total miles ÷ total gallons. For each state, fuel used = miles there ÷ fleet mpg; tax = (fuel used − tax-paid gallons bought there) × the state's rate. Credits in one state offset tax owed in another.
Where do I find IFTA tax rates? In the IFTA tax rate matrix for the quarter, published by IFTA, Inc. Some states add surcharges, so use the full rates for each jurisdiction.
What records does IFTA require?Distance records by jurisdiction for each qualified vehicle and fuel receipts for tax-paid purchases. Check your base state's record rules and keep them for the required years.
