How it’s calculated

The formula

Uptime = (Hours in period − Hours down) ÷ Hours in period · Downtime allowed = Hours in period × (1 − Target)

With the example: 6 hours down in a 720-hour month is 99.17%, short of a 99.5% target that allows about 3.7 hours a month. For equipment, uptime usually counts against scheduled hours, not the calendar; say which in your target. The equipment availability guide explains the difference.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Agree what counts as down: planned maintenance is often left out of uptime but kept in availability.
  • Track the causes of downtime, not just the hours; the top two or three usually explain most of it.
  • Each extra nine costs more than the last. Set targets per machine by how much its downtime costs.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate uptime?

Uptime = (hours in the period − hours down) ÷ hours in the period. 6 hours down in a 720-hour month is 99.17%.

How much downtime does 99.9% uptime allow?

About 8.8 hours a year, 44 minutes a month or 1.4 minutes a day.

Is uptime the same as availability?

Close, but definitions differ. Uptime often leaves planned maintenance out; availability for equipment usually counts it against scheduled hours. Say which you use.
