How it’s calculated

The formula

TRIR = Recordable cases × 200,000 ÷ Hours worked · DART = DART cases × 200,000 ÷ Hours worked

200,000 is the hours 100 employees work in a year at 40 hours a week for 50 weeks, the base OSHA uses for incidence rates. With the example: 3 cases in 250,000 hours is a TRIR of 2.4, and 1 DART case is a DART rate of 0.8. Compare with the Bureau of Labor Statistics rates for your industry. Use the cases on your OSHA 300 log, and the hours actually worked, not paid.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Customers and general contractors often ask for TRIR before they hire you; keep it current.
  • One case moves a small company’s rate a lot. Track near misses too; they show trouble before it becomes a recordable.
  • Many injuries in shops come from rushed or skipped steps. Required steps in procedures and pre-use checks keep them in.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate TRIR?

TRIR = recordable cases × 200,000 ÷ total hours worked. 3 cases in 250,000 hours is a TRIR of 2.4.

What is the DART rate?

Cases with days away from work, restricted work or job transfer × 200,000 ÷ hours worked.

Why 200,000 hours?

It's the hours 100 full-time employees work in a year (40 hours × 50 weeks), so rates compare across company sizes.
