See FleetZap Maintenance · Try the demoThe formula
Cost per mile = Fixed costs per month ÷ Miles per month + Fuel price ÷ mpg + Maintenance + Tires + Driver pay per mile
With the example numbers: $4,100 ÷ 10,000 miles = $0.41 fixed, $3.80 ÷ 6.5 mpg = $0.58 fuel, plus $0.20 + $0.04 + $0.70, so about $1.93 a mile. These are example inputs, not industry averages: put in your own bills and fuel log. The fleet fuel guide covers getting a true mpg.
Using the numberWhat to do with it
- Fixed cost per mile falls as miles go up: a truck parked half the month costs far more per mile than one that runs.
- Quote loads above this number, and count empty miles too; deadhead miles cost the same as paid ones.
- Work out maintenance per mile from a year of real repair bills per truck, not a rule of thumb. Older trucks climb fast.

How do you calculate cost per mile for a truck?Add up the fixed costs for a month (payments, insurance, permits) and divide by the miles driven that month, then add the per-mile costs: fuel price divided by mpg, maintenance, tires and driver pay per mile.
What is a good cost per mile for trucking? There is no single good number: it depends on the truck, fuel price, miles and pay. Work out your own from your bills and fuel logs, and quote loads above it, counting empty miles too.
How do I find fuel cost per mile?Divide the fuel price per gallon by the truck's miles per gallon. At $3.80 a gallon and 6.5 mpg, fuel costs about $0.58 a mile.
