How it’s calculated

The formula

Time utilization = Hours used ÷ Hours available · Dollar utilization = Yearly rental revenue ÷ Original equipment cost

With the example: 1,100 ÷ (250 × 8) = 55% time utilization, and $96,000 ÷ $250,000 = 38.4% dollar utilization. Definitions differ between companies (calendar days or working days, 8 or 10 hours), so pick one and keep it. The fleet utilization guide covers which one fits.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • A machine that stays under your target month after month is a candidate to sell, move to another site or rent out.
  • High utilization with rising repairs means the machine is earning but wearing; plan its PM by hours, not by the calendar.
  • Hours from the hour meter or telematics beat timesheets: people round up, meters don’t.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate equipment utilization?

Divide the hours a machine worked by the hours it was available. 1,100 hours used out of 2,000 available is 55% time utilization.

What is dollar utilization?

A rental measure: yearly rental revenue divided by the machine's original cost. $96,000 of revenue on a $250,000 machine is 38.4% dollar utilization.

What is a good equipment utilization rate?

It depends on the machine and the business. Set a target per category and look hard at machines that stay below it month after month.
