How it’s calculated

The formula

Gallons = Miles ÷ mpg · Fuel cost = Gallons × Price per gallon

With the example: 350 miles at 6.5 mpg is 53.8 gallons, about $204.62 at $3.80. Five trips a week on four trucks is about $4,090 a week. Use your real mpg from fuel logs, and the miles from the planned route, not the straight-line distance. The truck routing guide covers cutting the miles themselves.

Using the number

What to do with it

  • Shorter routes save more than cheaper fuel: every mile cut saves fuel, wear and driver time.
  • Idling adds fuel without miles; the fleet fuel savings calculator puts a number on it.
  • Price loads and service calls with the trip’s fuel cost in them, especially on long or rural runs.

Questions

Good to know

How do you calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the trip's miles by the vehicle's mpg to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. 350 miles at 6.5 mpg and $3.80 is about $205.

Should I use one-way or round-trip miles?

Round-trip, if the vehicle comes back empty or on the same route. Empty miles burn fuel too.

How can a fleet cut trip fuel costs?

Shorter, planned routes, less idling, correct tire pressure and steady speeds. Measure real mpg from fuel logs before and after.

How do I calculate fuel consumption?

Fuel used = miles ÷ miles per gallon. A 350 mile trip at 6.5 mpg uses about 53.8 gallons.
